A pair of bright eyes -- Filial piety, respect for the elderly, and love for the elderly
"Of all virtues, filial piety is the most important." "Filial piety is the foundation of morality." "Filial piety" is gratitude and love for the elderly;
"filial piety" is respect and care for the elderly. Respect for the elderly should be internalized, and filial piety should be outwardly manifested. Filial piety is always a part of our lives. We must avoid being superficially clever, deceiving the elderly, making empty promises, or speaking grand words. Filial piety resides in the heart and is put into action.
—Epigraph
"The sunset is infinitely beautiful, just before dusk." The setting sun shines brightly on the city streets. Several elderly men stroll slowly, and a grandmother walks to the market.
The school bell rings, and students pour out of the school gate in groups of several or two. Some are picked up by car, some by bicycle, and some on foot. The sounds of vehicles and people mingle together.
Two sixth-grade girls, wearing clean white and blue school uniforms, hold hands and chat happily as they weave through the crowd at the market entrance. One is wearing a red scarf, named Xiaomei, and the other is named Xiaomei.
"Make way, make way!" A blond boy on a racing bike shouted, weaving left and right behind her. He nearly hit Xiaomei, then narrowly missed an elderly woman, causing her to fall. Tomatoes and cucumbers scattered everywhere, and several eggs were broken. The boy sped off without looking back. The old woman lay half-reclined on the ground, seemingly a little dizzy. A crowd gathered, but no one dared to help her up.
Xiao Mei listened to the comments, her large, watery eyes widening even more, clear and bright. She was about to go to help when Xiao Mei stopped her, saying, "No, or you'll get stuck with her." Xiao Mei smiled, her bright eyes shining, and said, "It's alright." She pulled Xiao Mei along, groping her way to the old woman, and asked with concern, "Grandma, should we take you to the hospital?" The old woman weakly replied, "It's alright, could you please get me a glass of water?" Xiao Mei quickly ran to the nearby cake shop, asked the owner for a glass of hot water, and brought it to the old woman. The old woman, her hands trembling, took a packet of pills from her pocket, swallowed two, took the glass, and drank the water. "Slow down, be careful not to burn yourself," Xiao Mei said hurriedly. Xiao Mei picked up the vegetables from the ground and carried them away.
After resting for a while, Xiaomei pulled the old lady by the shoulder and helped her up using the handrail. Xiaomei also came up to help the old lady get up. "Grandma, where do you live? We'll take you home." "No need, I'll take the bus for one stop." "Let us take you home." Xiaomei insisted on helping the old lady to the bus stop to wait for the bus.
A bus arrived quickly, and the two students struggled to help the elderly woman onto the bus. Xiaomei paid the fare, and the elderly woman tried to give her money back, but Xiaomei stopped her. Several passengers got off, and the three of them found seats. An elderly man stood coughing near the boarding door, but the young people barely glanced at him. Hearing this, Xiaomei stood up and called out, "Grandpa, take a seat here." The old man came over, covering his mouth with one hand, and said, "Thank you, good students." "Grandma is so lucky to have such a good granddaughter..."
The bus soon arrived at the stop. The elderly woman usually walked, and Xiaomei and Xiaomei carefully helped her upstairs. Xiaomei was also carrying the elderly woman's groceries. When the elderly woman got home, she knocked on the door. It was presumably her son who answered. He had heard that his grandmother had been hit by a car. Furious, Xiaomei and Xiaomei were about to leave when he stopped them, saying, "You should take them to the hospital for a full check-up and cover all the costs. You can only leave if everything is fine." "They didn't hit her," Grandma quickly explained, offering them some apples.
Xiaomei smiled and said, "Thank you, Grandma, no need." Grandma insisted, and her son silently said, "I misunderstood you." Xiaomei slowly made her way down the stairs, holding onto the handrail,
while Xiaomei pulled her hand as they descended together. Grandma looked at Xiaomei's beautiful, large eyes. Her bright eyes, moving nimbly, were like a lone star twinkling in the black sky. At such an innocent age, her eyes were pure, and in them seemed to reflect confidence and a bright future.
"What happened to her eyes?" Grandma asked anxiously. Xiaomei said, "She comes from the countryside, and she's had trouble seeing since she was little… Ah, such bright eyes! Seeing the world with your heart is so much brighter than seeing it with your eyes. Those eyes, in the golden sunlight of dusk, were clear and moving." Bathed in the glow of the setting sun, the red scarf appeared even more vibrant and graceful.
If we retain a childlike heart, cherish every elderly person around us, and start with small acts of kindness, abandoning the mentality of "every man for himself" and striving for a selfless spirit, then we will all grow old. If we show filial piety to the elderly today, our children and grandchildren will show filial piety to us in the future. Let us inherit, carry forward, and pass on the Chinese tradition of filial piety and respect for the elderly.
